Dinho Ouro Preto says he was wrong to support Sergio Moro and criticizes Lava Jato

In the opinion of the lead singer of Capital Inicial, the operation that ended up arresting Lula represented the “rise of the extreme right” in Brazil

In 2016, Dinho Ouro Preto surprised many fans by publishing a photo next to Sergio Moro. The then federal judge in Paraná and responsible for the judgment in the first instance of the crimes verified by the Operation Lava Jato he was at a show by Capital Inicial in Curitiba and was applauded by the public when his presence was announced by the vocalist at the venue.

After the presentation, Dinho released a photo with Moro and, in the caption, praised the work of the judge, who would have a political career in the future by being Minister of Justice of the now ex-president. Jair Bolsonaro and currently a senator of the Republic. He declared at the time:

“I believe that what he is doing is important for our country. I also believe that he should act within the law, like every Brazilian citizen. […] Before the petistas get angry and accuse me of partiality, I think that the PSDB should also be investigated. And more: this also applies to the candidate I supported in the elections, Eduardo Campos and Marina Silva, whose campaign, unfortunately, seems to have left a trail of poorly explained stories. I don’t put my hand in the fire for anyone. We have to take advantage of this difficult and traumatic moment in our country to correct the practices of the politicians who claim to represent us. […] Having said all that, I support Moro and the investigations.”

Today, the Brazilian rock veteran appears to have regretted supporting the then-judge. In an interview with the podcast Superplain João Gordo (via Whiplash), he defined it as a “monumental error” to have believed in the suitability of the now senator.

Gordo initially asked if Dinho had spoken well of Moro. “The guy came to one of our shows, but that was in 2016”, replied the lead singer of Initial Capital, who, asked if he “came to believe” in the judge, replied: “In the beginning, yes. It was 2016, two years before Lula was arrested, I was among the powerful… and truth be told, the entire Federal Supreme Court was saying yes…”

According to João Gordo, “it was obvious that [o trabalho da Lava Jato] it was a hoax to arrest Lula so he wouldn’t participate [das eleições]”. Dinho Ouro Preto, then, revealed that he did not think so at first.

“But I bit my tongue. That was a monumental mistake.”

Dinho Ouro Preto and the extreme right

Also during the interview, Dinho Ouro Preto defined Operation Lava Jato as “responsible for the rise of the extreme right” in Brazil. Even so, the lead singer of Capital Inicial preferred to end the matter lightly: when João Gordo said that such a situation had started with the 2007 film Tropa de Elite, he replied:

“I think it all started when David Bowie died. Then the world starts to go wrong.”

Campaign against Bolsonaro

Since its publication in 2016, Dinho Ouro Preto has been questioned for his political position. Repeatedly, however, the lead singer of Capital Inicial has spoken out against former President Jair Bolsonaro, whose Minister of Justice Sergio Moro was.

In 2021, for example, he said on his YouTube channel that he does not have “loyalty to a politician” and that he likes to feel “independent” in that sense. The statement had an impact on social media (via I have more records than friends), to the point of manifesting itself in a conversation with Fernando Badauívocalist of CPM 22.

“Can you tell them that I voted for Fernando Haddad, please. Not only that, I campaigned against ‘Bolsonazi’. Just enter my Instagram. Please (please)… each one.”
