The influential executive has passed away at the age of 92, leaving a legacy unrivaled in the music industry.
Clarence Avant, one of the music scene’s most revered and influential figures, died this Monday 14, at the age of 92. The entrepreneur was in his residence in Los Angeles, surrounded by the affection of his loved ones. The information comes from AFP extension.
Born February 25, 1931 in a small town in North Carolina, Ahead he was not only an iconic figure in American music, but also a tireless advocate for black artists in an industry often marred by racism.
His pioneering spirit is evident in the founding of Venture Records, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a black-owned label and giant MGM. Subsequently, with the Sussex Records label, he released talents such as Bill Wither and has played a key role in the careers of notable artists such as Quincy Jones, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg and Whitney Houston.
In addition to his influence in music, Avant has also ventured into filmmaking, producing films and negotiating contracts for top black athletes like baseball icon Hank Aaron. Quincy Jones in 2006 described Avant as “the eternal godfather of our business,” noting that anyone astute in the business had walked past Clarence’s desk.
Rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company paid tribute to Avant’s legacy, highlighting its ability to open doors and break down barriers. “A true pioneer, mentor and champion, Clarence Avant is and always will be a giant among us,” the company said.
Throughout its career, Avant has been recognized by several institutions. In 2007, he was awarded the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award by the NAACP. Most recently, in 2021, he received special recognitions from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Recording Academy, organizer of the Grammys.
The Avant/Sarandos family expressed their grief, but also celebrated Clarence’s legacy. “The joy of his legacy eases the pain of our loss,” the statement concluded.
