Clarence Avant, the “godfather of black music,” has died.

The influential executive has passed away at the age of 92, leaving a legacy unrivaled in the music industry.

Rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company paid tribute to Avant’s legacy, highlighting its ability to open doors and break down barriers. “A true pioneer, mentor and champion, Clarence Avant is and always will be a giant among us,” the company said.

Throughout its career, Avant has been recognized by several institutions. In 2007, he was awarded the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award by the NAACP. Most recently, in 2021, he received special recognitions from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Recording Academy, organizer of the Grammys.

The Avant/Sarandos family expressed their grief, but also celebrated Clarence’s legacy. “The joy of his legacy eases the pain of our loss,” the statement concluded.
