English singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor celebrates the rediscovery of her dance classic “Murder on the Dance Floor” following its inclusion in an iconic scene from the film “Saltburn.” She published, on her Instagram, a graph showing the evolution of the performance of the 2001 song after the film’s premiere on the Prime Video platform. You highlighted the impressive milestone of nearly 1 million plays recorded on December 29th.
But the number didn’t stop there and reached more than 1.5 million on December 31, breaking the record for most listened to early music in a single day on Spotify.
Currently, “Murder on the Dance Floor” has a total of 236 million plays on the platform. To give you an idea, the singer’s second most listened to song is “Can’t Fight This Feeling”, with 12.2 million total streams.
Brazil was the country where the song was played the most, recording a 290% increase in its performance over the period.
On YouTube the song has accumulated more than 180 million plays, combining clips and official audio.
Success on the screen and trends on TikTok
“Murder on the Dance Floor” plays at the end of “Saltburn” as the soundtrack to a daring routine, in which actor Barry Keoghan dances completely naked. The scene was so successful that it sparked a trend on TikTok, with videos of several users trying to recreate the steps to the beat of the music.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor herself joined the trend on December 31, when the song exploded in popularity.
In an interview with People magazine, the singer said she authorized the use of the song without knowing how it would go down in history. “I didn’t really know what role I would play in the movie until I saw it at the screening, but I loved it,” she said. “I think it’s a very smart and funny movie. I really liked it.”
After seeing the scene, she met Keoghan and said she just had “a giggle.” “Now every time the music comes on, people will think she’s going to get naked!”
Currently 44 years old, the singer is still active. His most recent album, “Hana”, was released in June and was highly praised by British critics.
