OR Pearl Jam will release his twelfth studio album, Dark matter, via Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records on April 19, 2024, and will begin a 35-date world tour in May.
In 2023, members of the Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder [vocais], Jeff Ament [baixo], Gossard Stone [guitarra ritmo], Mike McCready [guitar principal] AND Matt Cameron [bateria] reunited at Shangri-La Studios, Malibu, where they simply plugged in and played, under the direction of the producer Andrea Watts.
The instrumentalists played face to face, gathered in the same space, to be able to communicate sonically at the highest level. Composed and recorded in a creative explosion, Dark matter was born after just three weeks of work.
Consequentially, Dark matter channels the collective spirit of a group of brothers and old creative partners gathered in the same space, playing as if their lives depended on it. All the blood, sweat, tears and energy of a storied career have been renewed and poured into this singular work.
The band members personally performed the album during a listening party at the iconic Troubadour in West Hollywood during GRAMMY week:
Vedder He said: “I have goosebumps, because I have good memories. We are still finding ways to communicate. We’re at a point in our lives where we may or may not do that, but we still care about putting out something that’s meaningful and hopefully our best work. Without exaggeration, I think this is our best work”.
Ament added: “That’s what Ed said about us getting together in the same space at this point. We felt we were about to make a really important record. A lot of it had to do with the atmosphere Andrew created. He has encyclopedic knowledge of our history, not just as a band and how we write songs, but also as musicians. He could identify things we did in old songs to the point where I thought, ‘What the hell is he talking about?’ His excitement was contagious. He’s a force. I just want to thank you for keeping us on the right path. I couldn’t be more proud of us as a band. I’m so grateful to the fans, but more importantly, to my brothers, those people I made it with music “.
The band celebrates independent record stores with the release of a special edition of Dark matter on April 20th.
The album packaging Dark matter contains light painting drawings by Alexandr Gnezdilov. Light painting, or “light painting”, is an artistic form of photography in which images are created by adjusting the camera’s exposure over a long period of time and using a light source, such as a flashlight, to “paint” on the dark. The album cover was created using a large kaleidoscope of his own creation. Each letter visible on the cover has been individually captured and handwritten in the air with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect.
It is worth mentioning that dark matter is the band’s first release since the acclaimed Gigaton (2020).
