Production of the project will begin shortly after a new film by the director about the life of Jesus Christ
After receiving 10 Oscar nominations for the epic “The Assassins of the Flower Moon”Martin Scorsese plans to make two films back to back: a religious drama about Jesus Christ and another musical about Frank Sinatra.
Films about Jesus
The Oscar-winning director, who helped launch the New Hollywood since the 1970s, it has aimed to bypass film studios and independently finance “Life of Jesus,” based on the 1973 book by Shūsaku Endō. She took the same approach with the 2016 drama “Silence” (also adapted from an Endō novel), and the result was one of the biggest box office flops of her career.
Scorsese would like to enlist “Silence” star Andrew Garfield for the Jesus project, although it is unclear whether the 40-year-old actor is being considered for the title role or to play one of the disciples. Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”) was also considered for the film. Production is expected to begin later this year with filming in Israel, Italy and Egypt. However, filming in Israel can become a huge logistical challenge, as the country is at war with Hamas in Gaza and was recently bombed by Iran.
Sinatra movies
However, Sinatra’s project may also encounter obstacles: the legendary crooner’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, controls her father’s estate and has not yet given her blessing to the film. But that didn’t stop Scorsese from putting together a dazzling cast: regular collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio would play the singer, while Jennifer Lawrence would play his second wife, actress Ava Gardner – according to Variety magazine’s sources. It was Gardner who broke up Sinatra’s marriage to Nancy Barbato, Tina’s mother.
DiCaprio and Lawrence have already worked together in “Don’t Look Up”, a film that has created a lot of buzz in 2021. With two of the biggest movie stars on the planet as protagonists, the biopic is piquing the interest of major studios and streamers. Apple, which financed the $215 million budget for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” would like to continue working with the director, but Sony is considered the favorite to make the project.
Other projects
Also on the immediate horizon is a collaboration between the director and Steven Spielberg for the “Cape Fear” series, based on the film “Cape Fear”, directed by Scorsese in 1991. It is produced by Apple TV+.
Additionally, Scorsese is developing a series about Catholic saints, called “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints,” for Fox Nation. The project is a creation of Matti Leshem (producer of “Águas Rasas”) and dramatizes the story of eight saints, including Joan of Arc, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Francis of Assisi and Thomas Becket.
