Modern Playlist | 50 Clips to Stay Up to Date on New Trends

Relationship features a band with Keanu Reeves, the first transsexual punk singer, new indie artists and an electronic project that will play in Sao Paulo in August

The Modern Playlist is a selection of new alternative sounds collected from 50 recent music videos. The list is an invitation to enter the underground of YouTube, where the artists that critics will discover next year play.

The presentation of the clips starts heavily with the new generation of grunge and shoegazer. But not everything is distorted guitar in the 3-hour list, which also flirts with folk guitars and ends with synthesizers, with danceable synthpop and EBM (Electronic Body Music) sounds.

Among the veterans, the American band Dog Star stands out, formed in the 90s and disappeared since its famous bassist, Keanu Reeves, burst into theaters with “The Matrix”. Although the name is not so popular, Laura Jane Grace is also famous for being the first transgender punk rock singer. She was the leader of the band Against Me! when she made her transition in 2012.

Other names on the street include American singer-songwriters Torres and Lauren Ruth Ward, and Britain’s Maricka Harkmann, who have been playing for more than a decade. Experienced rockers may also have heard of Australian band Middle Kids and Irish band Sprints, who have been recording for six and five years, as well as Rinse, a project by Australian Joe Agius, whose wife Harriette Pilbeam, aka Hatchie, is the bassist – he’s better known as Hatchie’s guitarist. The pair appear pushing a bed through the streets of Brisbane in the video for “Kiss Me (Kill Me)”, evoking a famous scene from the 1965 mod film “A Bossa da Conquista” (The Knack… and How to Get It).

Among the many newcomers are the noisy female trio from Brooklyn, Hello Mary, who opens the playlist and illustrates the post, the British R&B group from the 60s The Mags – former house band of the Cavern Club, in Liverpool -, the androgynous Japanese garage band Voodoo Club, Australian folk group Full Flower Moon Band, etc. Among the synthesizers, two talents are already on their way to the Brazilian basement: the French duo Potochkine performed in February at the Madame Underground Club, and Kontravoid, a project of Canadian Cameron Findlay, will play on August 24 at the legendary São Paulo venue, which was founded in the 80s as Madame Satã.

As always, the videos are arranged in order of sonic affinity in a playlist – to watch on a Smart TV, search for Cast in the Settings tab in Chrome or More tools/Stream etc. on Edge -, with the aim of inserting a sequence that enhances the impression of a video recording/mixtape. Try listening without skipping tracks on the Premium version of YouTube (without commercial breaks). Or just press play and forget it.
