The singers spoke out against the xenophobic and racist joke made at Donald Trump’s rally
Reaction against racism and xenophobia
Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has received support from several Latino artists, after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a racist joke about the island of Puerto Rico during a Donald Trump event on Sunday (10/27). Supporters include Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
During his attendance at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York, Hinchcliffe made xenophobic and racist comments against Latinos, Jews and blacks. The low point was the comment that led Latino stars to declare their vote for Harris. “I don’t know if you know this, but right now there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” said the comedian, who was immediately criticized by Kamala Harris’ campaign.
Artistic support
Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny weighed in on the issue with a video of Harris, in which she criticizes Trump for his actions after Hurricanes Irma and Maria passed through Puerto Rico in 2017. In 2021, a report highlighted that the Trump government has delayed more than $20 billion in humanitarian aid following the devastation of the island.
“There is a lot at stake in this election for Puerto Rican voters and for Puerto Rico. And this election is not just a choice between me and Donald Trump. It’s a choice between two very different visions for our nation,” Kamala says in the video published by Bad Bunny, who also added another video on the topic: “I will never forget what Donald Trump did, and what he didn’t do, when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader. He abandoned the island, has tried to block aid after consecutive devastating hurricanes and offer nothing but paper towels and insults.”
Singer Jennifer Lopez also shared a snippet of Kamala Harris’ video along with a screenshot of the Democratic candidate’s plan to help the island of Puerto Rico. The situation repeated itself with singer Ricky Martin, who even added a video of the Trumpist comedian making his racist joke.
