Modern playlist: 50 recent alternative audio clips, from grunge to garage

List brings together new generation bands such as Mannequin Pussy, Amyl and the Sniffers, Militarie Gun, Porches, Skating Polly and many others

Selecting alternative clips

The Modern Playlist is a selection of new alternative sounds collected in 50 recent clips, combining recent discoveries and songs from veterans of the underground scene. The current roster focuses on alternative rock. It begins with a grunge of lead guitars and screamed vocals, swings with disco funk, speeds up with post-punk and hardcore, and ends with garage rock ballads and ’60s space rock.

Music releases

The melodic panorama opens with Mannequin Pussy, an American band that released one of the best albums of 2024, “I Got Heaven”, their fourth album and second on Epitaph Records (Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz’s label). But most of the songs come from younger groups, such as the Australians Amyl and the Sniffers, who have expanded their punk repertoire with their third album, “Cartoon Darkness” (released penultimate Friday, 10/25), and the Californians Militarie Gun, who returns with a new sound after last year’s debut album. The new grunge generation is also represented by Snoozer, Porches, Skating Polly, Hot Joy and many others.

The list also highlights representatives of European art rock, such as Suzan Köcher’s krautrock group Suprafon, the Sicilian group The Whistling Heads and the English singer Welly, as well as members of the new American punk scene, including the groups Gouge Away, from Florida , Lens by Death California, Wax Jaw from Philadelphia, Hag from Louisiana and Drug Church from New York, while European garage offers the vintage repertoire of the London group Sex Swing, the Austrian band Celestial Guard, the Swiss trio The Jackets, the French trio Juniore and the Dutch duo Donna Blu.

Modern veterans

While most of the songs are played by millennials, the list includes famous veterans. English singer Nick Lowe, for example, has been active since the early 1970s, when he played bass in the bands Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile. His solo career began with a historic feat. The single “So It Goes”, released by Stiff Records in August 1976, is simply the first independent rock record of all time. Still active, he now plays ballads accompanied by the Texan instrumental surf music group Los Straitjackets.

Fans of ’90s rock can still find new music from nu metal band POD and garage band The Dwarves. Finally, there are two covers. American singer Sierra Ferrell recorded the country classic “Funnel of Love,” a 1961 hit by Wanda Jackson, and Berlin duo She Owl appears with “By this River,” an original 1977 recording by Brian Eno.

Play and mosh

As always, the videos are organized in the playlist in order of sonic affinity and in an indie club video recording atmosphere: to watch them on Smart TV, look for Cast in Chrome’s Settings tab or More Tools/Stream etc. in Edge. Try listening without skipping tracks on the Premium version of YouTube (without ad breaks), pressing play to mosh while the songs mix automatically.
