The city of Santos has revealed notable and enduring bands such as Zimbra, Garage Fuzz, Aliados and, of course, Charlie Brown Jr.. Inheriting the tradition with good hands on the guitar, the Capote quintet formed a year ago and has just released his self-titled EP on the Turtle’s Audio label.
All songs were cut by members Pedro Cosme (vocals), João Pedro Oreggia (guitar and vocals), Johnny Freitas (guitar and vocals), Cassiano Guedes Carduz (bass and vocals) and João Pedro “Truck” Gonçalves (drums). Under the hardcore sound, the group tackles topics such as heartbreak (Joelho Ralado); the challenges of starting over in the face of fear of stagnation (I, Nightmare); flirting (Céu Aberto); political themes (Propaganda) and nostalgic childhood themes (Essenza).
“I end up being responsible for the songwriting process, but the songs are only completed with the participation of the entire band. We build the melody together and also modify the lyrics when the need arises”, underlines singer Pedro Cosme.
The first formation of the band Charlie Brown Jr., when it was still called What’s Up,” began at the home of guitarist João Pedro Oreggia. “I still have one of the first lyrics Chorão wrote, still in English,” he recalls.
Of all Capote’s members, Johnny Freitas is the biggest fan. He currently works as a luthier (a craftsman specializing in the construction, repair and adjustment of stringed instruments) and has direct access to the guitar used by Marcão, during the Charlie Brown Jr. era.
“It is a huge pride and pleasure to have this access to an instrument that is a living part of the history of Brazilian rock,” he celebrates.
On November 24th Capote will give the first live performance of the new EP. The show will be held at Casa AlgoHits, in Vila Madalena, São Paulo. Capote is one of the guests of the Banda de Casinha Festival.
“This is a festival that really embraces us and bands from other scenes in Brazil. Although we have little time as a band, we have already gained a loyal and fascinated audience that accompanies us. With this new EP we want to consolidate this work and broaden our audience”, says João Pedro Oreggia, guitarist.
