Are the Sex Pistols back? Understand how they ended up in The Town 2025

Legendary punk band was confirmed as an attraction at the São Paulo festival alongside Green Day, Iggy Pop and Pitty

When the organization of The Town announced the Sex Pistols As one of the festival’s attractions in 2025, many people asked themselves: what do you mean? The band founded — and ended — in the 1970s even held occasional meetings in 1996, 2002 to 2003 and 2007 to 2008, but the vocalist John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) has been broken with his other colleagues for a long time.

Still, they decided to return. Without Lydon, of course. The guitarist Steve Jonesthe drummer Paul Cook and the bassist Glen Matlock (original member who in the 1970s was replaced by Sid Vicious) reunited with the vocalist Frank Carterfrom the project Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes.

Initially, it would be a special occasion, with two shows having a charitable purpose: to raise funds to maintain the Bush Hallan iconic events venue in London hit hard by the post-pandemic situation. They even scheduled an extra presentation. They all took place in August.

However, there was a feeling of “I want more”. Then, the quartet confirmed another sequence of shows, visiting Italy, Scotland and, again, England, between August and September.

In an interview with RockonteursSteve Jones confirmed that the Sex Pistols will continue with Frank Carter in John Lydon’s place. And he added that the group would hit the road in 2025: something that proved true with confirmation in The Town.

“This is different. It’s a different vibe. It’s like night and day. He (Frank) doesn’t try to be John. It’s just fun. Plus, we’re playing it the way it should be played. And you have this lunatic jumping all over the place. He brings a great element to the fun part of it. Let’s hit the road next year.”

What are the shows like?

As the Sex Pistols catalog is very short — only one album has been released to date, Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistolsin 1977 —, all the songs from the work are played. Furthermore, there is plenty of space for “Satellite” (B-side of the single “Holidays in the Sun”), “Silly Thing” (included in the film soundtrack The Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle) and/or covers of “No Fun” (Stooges) and “My Way” (Frank Sinatrainfamously covered by Sid Vicious).

Sex Pistols in Brazil

The Sex Pistols’ only visit to Brazil took place in 1996. On that occasion, the band — with John Lydon, of course — performed at the festival Close Up Planetwith two dates in São Paulo and one in Rio de Janeiro. The tour marked the first reunion of the previously disbanded group in 1978. They then performed shows in 2002 and 2003 and, finally, from 2007 to 2008.
