During an interview with Radio X, Robert Smith revealed how one of the great inspirations for the song is ‘Last Christmas’, a Christmas hit by Wham!

Iconic singer, frontman, songwriter and guitarist of the iconic British rock band The Cure, Robert Smith revealed how “I wrote bubblegum pop music” that could become a Christmas single.

During an interview with the journalist John Kennedy in Radio X, Smith was part of a special reproduction of all tracks from Songs of a Lost World (2024), the group’s 14th studio album, which was voted seventh on the list of the 10 best international albums of the year.

While discussing material from the latest release of The Curethe 65-year-old artist spoke about the inspirations for putting together the tracklistsuch as the encouragement he received from his brother in the early days of his career, in addition to his complex relationship with mortality.

Robert Smith explained how, above all, he wants to bring “emotional response” to fans and listeners, while the new material he’s working on has a much more upbeat feel, like a “really bubblegum pop song.”

“I always just want an emotional response from what I write… Unless I think. ‘That’s a catchy idea,’ but those days are kind of over a little bit,” he said. “Although I wrote a really bubblegum pop song! I’m struggling to figure out how I’m going to release it. Having been in the city all day, the amount of times I’ve heard it’Last Christmas‘ [canção de Wham!]. I think I just need to put some Christmas words on it and release it!”

However, Smith did not reveal any further details or a release date for the song in question, which has no prospects for getting off the ground.
