The stakes are higher than ever America has talent Season 17 and the first 55 artists (including comedian Jordan Conley as the winner of the generic vote ) have one more chance in qualifying to be in the top ten for the final. The first night of qualifying brought out some of the most memorable moments from the auditions, including country singer Drake Milligan Terry Crews’ Avery Dixon Gold Bell Winner and of course singer Ben Lapidus, also known as the Parmesan Dude. Lapidus spoke to Gossipify and other outlets about his transition to heavy metal in qualifying and why he found the performance “absurd” … but not in a bad way!
Ben Lapidus started his second version of “The Parmisan Cheese Song” by claiming that he would perform a very serious song instead of something engaging, to quote it, “Big Parma”. Simon Cowell (he couldn’t stop talking about the song after hearing Lapidus ) seemed intrigued by the change in tone from his first time in AG furniture. The singer then started singing his signature cheese song and everything fell into place!
There was a long pause between when she interrupted the serious song and opened her shirt to reveal her leather outfit. When I asked him what was going through his mind during this long hiatus where no one knew what was going to happen, he shared:
What went through my mind? It is as if you are dreaming, as if you are an inch and a half inside your eyes and you are behind glass. Everything takes place in front of you and the regular sense of action you have as being in a body disappears and you are more like a witness. This is my experience of these high pressure environments at this time. It’s really amazing, actually. It’s a bit of an absurd feeling.
Even the singer himself might admit that his heavy metal version of “The Parmesan Cheese Song” made him feel a little “silly”, but that’s not a bad thing when it comes to America has talent. (Just look at the reaction of the crowd whenever Sethward makes an appearance .) Her performance in qualifying made the audience sing and dance, including Judge Heidi Klum! It is certainly one of the most memorable moments of the entire season, not to mention the first night of qualifying. I’m sure I’m not the only one with the song stuck in my head!
So what does Ben Lapidus have in mind for the future? When he talked to the press after his shift in AG qualifying round, his fate was still in the hands of the voters, so there was no guarantee he would return for the final. However, he didn’t seem too worried about his future of him in NBC success, as he shared this about what he’s planning next:
I have absolutely nothing planned, but whatever it is, it’s going to be crazy. This is what I mean … What you saw tonight is how far I’ve come. [laughs] So if by the grace of God I get to the final, then I’ll be fine. It will be, when I say it, and I hate that word, crazy. It will be crazy.
Not worrying about what to do next while your future hangs in the balance seems like a pretty easy way to tackle the timeline of results that was missing in less than 24 hours! Viewers had less than twelve hours to vote (voting closed at 7:00 ET Wednesday after Tuesday night’s live episode), so their fate was sealed from the start. Take another look at their heavy metal-filled qualifying performance of “The Parmisan Cheese Song”!
Whether that fate moves towards the end or just becomes the guy with the most catchy cheese-themed song America has talent the story will be revealed during the earnings show Wednesday August 10 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
