Episode 1180 of the popular anime series One Piece premiered on September 27, marking the final television broadcast for the franchise in 2026. Production studio Toei Animation announced that the show will now take a pause, with the ongoing story set to continue in 2027.
To accompany the scheduling update, the creators released new promotional artwork featuring the main characters of the current narrative saga.
Recent broadcast schedule
This upcoming hiatus is the second recent interruption for the long running animated adaptation. The series previously went on a broadcast break in December 2025 and eventually returned to television screens in April.
Following that April return, the studio produced and released 24 new episodes of the continuation. These recent installments were broadcast on a strict weekly schedule, with a new episode airing every Monday.
Decades of pirate adventures
One Piece is a globally recognised Japanese media franchise that originated as a manga series created by Eiichiro Oda. The story follows the maritime adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates, a colourful crew of outlaws led by their ambitious captain, Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy and his crew travel across dangerous oceans in search of a legendary treasure that will allow him to become the next Pirate King.
The Toei Animation television adaptation first began broadcasting in 1999. Over the subsequent decades, the show has aired more than one thousand episodes and continues to maintain massive popularity with audiences around the world. It stands as one of the longest running and most successful animated television shows in history.
Upcoming franchise releases
While the main animated series is on pause until 2027, the franchise continues to expand through other productions. The streaming platform Netflix previously produced and released a live action television series based on the property.
Additionally, fans will see a new remake project that covers the main events of the story. That upcoming project is scheduled to premiere in February.
