Paramount+ Plans New Star Trek Shows as Current Era Ends

Paramount+ is developing new Star Trek television series to keep the franchise on screen as existing shows approach their conclusions, executive Jane Wiseman confirmed.

The current era of Star Trek television, which began with the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, is nearing its final phase. Both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are expected to end in the coming years, leaving no newly approved series currently on the platform's slate.

Wiseman, executive and head of original productions at Paramount+, said that plans are actively underway to guarantee that Star Trek maintains a permanent presence on television. She noted that many employees working across the company's offices are passionate enthusiasts of the science fiction property.

Among those fans is Chris Parnell, executive vice president of Paramount+ Originals, whom Wiseman described as the franchise's number one fan inside the company. She stressed that internal passion is driving an active movement to chart the future of the universe originally created by Gene Roddenberry.

Future television development and CBS Studios partnership

Wiseman stated that the executive team's main goal and duty is to discover the next major direction for Star Trek. Paramount+ is holding discussions with numerous writers and working with the support of CBS Studios, which handles television production for the franchise. She emphasized that finding the next installment of the property is essential for the service.

Additionally, Wiseman noted that Paramount+ remains in regular contact with sister studio Paramount Pictures regarding feature film developments. Paramount Pictures currently has a new Star Trek film in active development under directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

The upcoming feature directed by Goldstein and Daley is expected to stand independently, with no story connections to any previous Star Trek television or movie productions. Meanwhile, earlier plans to produce Star Trek 4 as a continuation of the alternate Kelvin timeline have been officially scrapped.

Live-action comedy project status

Questions also remain over a live-action comedy series announced in 2024. Writers Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien joined forces to develop the project, which was pitched as a comedy set on a 25th-century resort planet.

The project was conceived as the franchise's first live-action comedy series, expanding on comedic themes previously developed in animated Star Trek formats. However, it is currently unclear whether development on the resort planet concept is still moving forward.

Ending plans for Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy

Meanwhile, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is preparing for its final season, although Paramount+ has not yet set an official release date. The final chapter will consist of six episodes.

The conclusion of Strange New Worlds will feature guest appearances by classic original series characters Dr. Leonard McCoy and Hikaru Sulu. The series follows the crew of the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike during the period preceding Captain James T. Kirk's command.

In addition, the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy aired in March. Network officials revealed during that same month that the upcoming second season of Starfleet Academy will be its last, marking the planned conclusion of the current television lineup.
