Singer Pascal Obispo has denied receiving preferential treatment during recent megafires, explaining that he hosted gendarmes at his Cap Ferret property to help combat the blazes. The musician addressed accusations while announcing that ticket sales had opened for an August 27 charity concert at Arkea Floirac to support wildfire victims.
Obispo was evacuated alongside hundreds of thousands of residents as a massive fire destroyed 42,000 hectares in the Gironde region alone. Cap Ferret served as his childhood vacation spot before he turned it into his annual residence, having hosted the television show Sept à Huit there in the spring. The singer, who performed Tombé pour elle (L'île aux oiseaux) in honor of the area, considers himself almost a local child.
The day after his evacuation, Obispo heard on the news that military reinforcements were heading to the region. He then offered his house and land to the army, prompting the gendarmerie to establish an advanced post at his home for several days. Cap Ferret represented the geographically lowest strategic post, where officers conducted patrols, control rounds across the peninsula, and fire suppression efforts near mission sectors.
Response to critics
Responding on Instagram, Obispo stated that he was simply fulfilling his civic duty and trying to be useful during the disaster. He added that it was humanly impossible to stay inactive while sworn professionals worked to protect lives, property, and villages. He noted that while a musician's contribution cannot compare to the work of firefighters, he would continue trying to help for as long as God permits.
Obispo also urged people spending energy on criticism and controversy to direct their efforts toward helping instead. His message received widespread support from anonymous commentators and fellow artists. Singer Axel Bauer, who is set to perform at the August 27 benefit concert, encouraged him to keep his inner fire and ignore angry critics. Artists Zazie, Bénabar, Julien Clerc, and Natasha St-Pier will also participate in the event.
