Penelope Cruz broke down in tears at the 2026 Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy, on Tuesday evening after her new movie Bunker received a 15-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, marking the longest applause recorded at the festival so far this year.
The 52-year-old Academy Award-winning Spanish actress attended the world premiere at the historic Sala Grande alongside her husband and co-star Javier Bardem, 57, and director Florian Zeller.
As the audience inside the festival auditorium rose to their feet following the screening, Cruz was overcome with emotion and wept uncontrollably on stage while Bardem comforted her.
Director Florian Zeller made sure his lead actors had their moment in the spotlight, grabbing Cruz and Bardem by their hands to pull them to the front of the stage. Bardem then stepped aside and gestured toward his wife as the crowd continued to applaud.
Cruz looked stunning for the premiere in a custom red Chanel gown designed by Matthieu Blazy. Chanel is a French luxury fashion house, and Blazy serves as a prominent fashion designer known for his haute couture designs.
Record ovation at Venice Film Festival
The 15-and-a-half-minute audience reaction for Bunker is the longest standing ovation recorded at the 2026 Venice Film Festival so far. The applause fell just two minutes short of the recent festival record set in 2024, when The Room Next Door received a 17-minute standing ovation.
The Venice International Film Festival, held annually on the Venice Lido in Italy, was founded in 1932 and is recognized as the world's oldest film festival. It forms part of the international "Big Three" film festivals alongside the Cannes Film Festival in France and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany.
Extended standing ovations have become a recurring feature of this year's Venice event. Last week, American actor John Malkovich was brought to tears when his film Wild Horse Nine, currently tipped for Academy Award consideration, received a 13-minute ovation.
Other screenings at the festival have also drawn enthusiastic responses. Primetime, directed by Lance Oppenheim and starring Robert Pattinson and Bucking Fastard, received a seven-minute standing ovation.
Director Werner Herzog's new drama starring acting sisters Kate Mara and Rooney Mara also earned a seven-minute standing ovation from the festival crowd.
Psychological thriller plot details
Bunker marks the ninth time Cruz and Bardem have collaborated on screen together. The movie is already earning positive reviews from film critics, including a four-star review from Daily Mail critic Brian Viner.
In the psychological thriller, Cruz and Bardem play married couple Sofia and Miguel. Miguel is an architect whose 17-year marriage comes under severe emotional strain after he accepts a morally ambiguous project to build a survivalist bunker for a wealthy tech billionaire, played by Paul Dano.
While Miguel works on the project, Sofia begins working alongside an American novelist named Jeremy Gray, played by actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Water taxi arrival at Hotel Excelsior
On Wednesday morning, the day after their premiere, Cruz and Bardem were seen departing the ultra-luxury Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido Resort by water taxi. The beachfront hotel opened on the Venice Lido in 1932 and serves as the historic hub for celebrity arrivals during the festival.
Cruz wore a floral dress and held hands with her husband as they boarded the boat. Bardem looked casually cool in a beige shirt and matching beige trousers as the couple waved to gathered fans from the water.
The couple appeared happy and relaxed following their success at the Sala Grande, smiling broadly as they traveled through the Venetian waterways after Tuesday evening's emotional premiere.
Marriage and working together
Cruz and Bardem have been married for 16 years and share two children, 15-year-old son Leo and 13-year-old daughter Luna.
The couple first met 34 years ago in 1992 on the set of the Spanish romantic comedy-drama Jamon jamon. At the time, Cruz was 17 years old and Bardem was 23. Although they played romantic partners in the film, they did not start dating until 15 years later.
The pair reunited in 2007 on the set of the 2008 Woody Allen comedy-drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Cruz went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, becoming the first Spanish actress to win an Oscar.
In May, Bardem spoke to Variety about how he and Cruz coordinate their acting careers to support their family life. He explained that since the birth of their first child, the couple has maintained a strict commitment that at least one parent must remain at home at all times.
Bardem explained that he does not request contract perks such as larger trailers or luxury hotel suites. "I don't have musts in my contract that have to do with bigger trailers or luxurious suites," Bardem told Variety. "The only thing I do pay attention to is, no more than two weeks away from my family."
Praising his wife, Bardem said he feels blessed to share his life with Cruz. "Penelope is an amazing, beautiful, good human being, the way she relates to her family, to her friends, to our kids, to me, to herself. It's been a lot of years, and I haven't seen a hint of malice in her," Bardem said.
Bardem added: "On top of that, she's amazingly f****** beautiful! When I see her being photographed on some magazines, I go, 'Is that my wife? Jesus, is it? It must be.'"
