Soft toys can pose health dangers to children across four main categories of risk, immunologist Dr. Vladimir Bolibok warned in an interview with RT.
Speaking to the news outlet, Bolibok explained that the potential threats from soft toys fall into chemical, microbiological, allergenic, and physical hazards.

Chemical and microbial hazards
The expert stated that stuffed toys may contain toxic chemical compounds that are hazardous if swallowed, inhaled, or brought into direct contact with skin. He noted that these substances include heavy metals, phenol, formaldehyde, synthetic dyes, and fragrances.
Formaldehyde and phenol are industrial chemical compounds frequently used in manufacturing resins, synthetic textiles, and plastics. Inhalation or skin contact with volatile chemical dyes and heavy metals can trigger toxic reactions, skin irritation, or systemic health issues in young children.
Microbiological risks stem from the fabric used in plush items, Bolibok added. He said soft toys provide an ideal environment for accumulating microorganisms because of their porous structure, which is difficult to sanitize fully, combined with regular contact with hands, floors, and saliva.
Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi thrive in porous materials that trap moisture and organic matter. Unlike hard plastic toys, plush fabric retains dirt and fluids, creating conditions where microbes persist despite routine surface cleaning.
Allergens and physical risks
Regarding allergenic hazards, Bolibok explained that soft toys frequently accumulate common environmental triggers, including dust and pet hair.
Dust mites and animal dander are among the most common airborne allergens affecting young children. When trapped in soft textiles near a sleeping child, these particles can exacerbate respiratory allergies, asthma symptoms, or chronic nasal inflammation.
Physical threats involve loose or poorly secured components that children could accidentally swallow or inhale. Pediatricians strongly recommend keeping soft toys, pillows, and bulky blankets out of infant cribs to prevent obstructing a baby's airways.
Pediatric health organizations globally emphasize maintaining a clear sleep area for infants. Removing soft items, heavy bedding, and stuffed animals from cribs is a standard infant safety measure designed to reduce suffocation risks during sleep.

Bolibok previously issued a warning regarding certain strongly scented houseplants, noting that intense flower odors can trigger migraines, allergic reactions, and vasomotor rhinitis.
