Japanese mechanic Soichiro Honda built one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers after Toyota Motor Corporation rejected his initial order for piston rings in the 1940s.

According to a report by automotive outlet Supercar Blondie, the Japanese entrepreneur transformed that early failure into motivation to launch his own enterprise, navigating severe wartime destruction before establishing Honda Motor Company.

Early passion for motor vehicles

Honda developed a strong interest in automobiles during his childhood in Japan, where his father operated a bicycle repair shop. One of his earliest memories involved watching a Ford Model T travel along a local road, a moment that fascinated the young boy so much that he ran after the vehicle to inspect it up close.

The Ford Model T, produced by American industrialist Henry Ford, was one of the world's first mass-produced cars. Seeing the automobile inspired Honda to pursue a career in mechanics and automotive engineering.

At 15 years old, Honda left home to work as an apprentice in an automobile repair shop in Tokyo, the Japanese capital. After gaining practical experience in the city, he returned to his hometown of Hamamatsu, an industrial city in Shizuoka Prefecture, to open his own repair business.

During this period, Honda began designing custom vehicles and competing in motor races. He constructed one experimental race car equipped with a recycled aircraft engine, an extreme introduction to motorsport that provided him with valuable experience in vehicle design and performance tuning.

Rejection and wartime setback

Following his early racing experiments, Honda began manufacturing piston rings with the goal of supplying them to Toyota, which was growing into a major Japanese vehicle manufacturer. However, Toyota officials were unimpressed with his first attempt and rejected the components.

Rather than abandoning the project, Honda refined his design by experimenting with different metallurgical and manufacturing techniques. His persistence eventually paid off when he developed improved piston rings that met Toyota's quality standards, leading to an order from the company.

Honda built up his manufacturing enterprise, but his facilities suffered catastrophic damage during World War II. Air raids destroyed one of his primary factories, while a severe earthquake heavily damaged another production plant.

Recognizing that he could not maintain operations under those conditions, Honda sold the remaining assets of his damaged business to Toyota. However, he chose not to retire from manufacturing and instead decided to launch a new venture focused on light transportation.

Postwar motorcycle success

In the immediate aftermath of World War II, fuel across Japan was scarce and expensive, creating an urgent need for affordable personal mobility. Honda identified a market opportunity by combining surplus small engines with standard bicycles, offering citizens a cheap alternative to full-sized automobiles.

The motorized bicycles became extremely popular, prompting Honda to transition from modified cycles to purpose-built motorcycles. He established the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946 to expand his engineering operations.

Two years later, in 1948, he officially incorporated Honda Motor Company. By 1949, the firm had introduced its first complete, fully developed motorcycle to the public.

Honda motorcycles quickly dominated the domestic market in Japan before expanding internationally within a few years. To showcase its technology, the company entered international motorcycle racing competitions, winning prestigious events and establishing a global reputation for reliability and engineering excellence.

Global expansion and the Civic

Building on its success in two-wheeled transportation, Honda expanded into automobile manufacturing. In the 1970s, the company launched the Honda Civic, a compact passenger car that became one of the most successful models in automotive history.

The Civic arrived on global markets around the time of the 1973 international oil crisis, when soaring fuel prices created massive demand for economical vehicles. The model boasted exceptionally low fuel consumption, making it a commercial hit in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Toyota recruitment testing

The report by Supercar Blondie also highlighted how Toyota continues to evaluate technical skill, noting an unusual employment test used at the company's manufacturing facility in North Carolina.

The plant uses a timed rope assessment to test job candidates for assembly line roles. Applicants are required to thread a rope around six wall pegs in an exact sequence and direction in less than six seconds.

While the task appears deceptively simple on first impression, most candidates find it remarkably difficult under time pressure. The test helps recruiters determine whether an applicant possesses the manual dexterity, precision, and coordination needed for modern automotive manufacturing.
