While the wide hems of flared pants often concealed most of the boot, the square toe added a subtle geometric finish that altered the overall proportions of an outfit.
Jane Birkin and everyday seventies style
English-French singer and actress Jane Birkin became one of the defining champions of the square toe, turning the structured boot into part of her effortless daily uniform. Birkin, who died at age 76 in July 2023, was celebrated globally for her understated bohemian style and inspired the iconic Hermès Birkin handbag.
Archival photographs show Birkin wearing dark high-waisted flared trousers paired with a fitted white t-shirt and a large black leather briefcase. Her dark square-toe boots were almost entirely hidden beneath the trousers, with only the heel and straight front edge peeking out from under the hem.

Cher famously performed in high silver square-toe boots worn with a form-fitting turquoise jumpsuit covered in shimmering applications. Arzola Morillo highlighted that while head-to-toe stage glam may not fit daily workplace attire, consumers can easily adapt the structural shape of the footwear.
Rather than adopting silver metallic finishes or dramatic stage embellishments, modern wearers can choose the same geometric toe box in versatile neutral tones such as black, brown, burgundy, or beige.

The updated 2026 versions remove the theatrical elements of the original 1970s footwear. High-street retailers are omitting heavy platform soles and metallic fabrics in favour of a clean shaft, a stable heel, and a straight toe cap that integrates easily into existing wardrobes.
