Spanish fashion retailer Stradivarius has launched a new range of barefoot sneakers, prompting podiatrist Neus Moya to issue a detailed assessment of the footwear.
The model, named the S009 Barefoot Sneakers with Leather Details, is priced under 40 euros at 35.99 euros and has drawn significant attention on social media. Following a similar release by sister brand Zara, Stradivarius added the pair to its collection as minimalist shoes gain popularity in mainstream fashion. Moya conducted an analysis of the footwear to evaluate whether the high-street design delivers on the functional expectations of barefoot shoes.

Barefoot shoes are designed to replicate the sensation of walking unshod by eliminating artificial arch supports, thick heel cushioning, and elevated soles. Standard footwear often features a raised heel that alters body alignment, whereas minimalist footwear relies on a flat, thin sole to promote natural movement and strengthen foot musculature.
Moya gave the Stradivarius model a generally positive rating, highlighting several features that match recommended podiatric criteria. She noted that the sole is extremely thin, completely flat with zero drop between the heel and forefoot, and remarkably flexible. In a video review, Moya demonstrated that the shoe can be bent almost effortlessly. Stradivarius also confirms in its product description that the heel and front sections sit at the exact same height.
Sole Construction and Toe Box Design
The podiatrist also praised the shape of the toe box. Unlike conventional sneakers that taper at the front, the S009 features a wide, rounded front area that gives toes ample space to spread and flex freely during each step. Moya described the upper material as fitting like a glove, noting that the soft exterior textile adapts smoothly to the contours of the wearer's foot.

The sneakers feature double laces for precise fit adjustment and come with a removable insole that Moya described as very cushioned. Furthermore, the design omits a rigid heel counter at the back of the shoe. Heel counters are stiff inserts commonly used in standard footwear to stabilize the rearfoot, but barefoot designs exclude them to permit unrestricted ankle joint movement.
Despite her favorable initial review, Moya identified an important structural detail that buyers should consider before purchasing. She observed that the rubber sole is quite narrow through the midfoot section and ends short of the back of the sneaker, allowing the fabric upper to overhang at the heel without underlying support.

Potential Risks for Inward Foot Collapsing
Because the rear portion of the shoe lacks structural firmness, Moya warned that the design may not suit everyone. She explained that individuals whose feet tend to collapse or roll inward while walking could experience noticeable instability. In such cases, the lack of support might cause the shoes to deform after just a few wears, potentially worsening existing foot conditions or pathologies.
Despite this note of caution, Moya emphasized that her overall verdict remains positive. She acknowledged that the feeling of comfort provided by the sneakers was much greater than she had anticipated prior to testing them.
The S009 sneakers feature a retro-inspired aesthetic suitable for everyday wear outside sporting environments. The design combines leather and synthetic panels with visible stitching, double laces, and a contrasting brown outsole. Stradivarius offers the model in off-white and chocolate brown colorways, with the lighter option highlighted for its versatility when paired with jeans, bermuda shorts, dresses, or skirts.
