Wearing the same pair of athletic shoes for both running and gym workouts increases the risk of joint injuries by 20 to 30 percent, according to stylist and fashion historian Irina Katykhina.
In comments provided to Russian news outlet NEWS.ru, Katykhina explained that improperly matched sneakers place excessive strain on the knees, ankles, and lower back during physical activity.
Beginners frequently make the mistake of relying on a single pair of sneakers for every form of exercise. To prevent physical strain, Katykhina recommended selecting shoes specifically engineered for each athletic discipline. For running, she stated that footwear requires soft cushioning capable of absorbing impact loads generated during repetitive strides.
Specialized Footwear for Strength Training and CrossFit
Different physical activities subject the body to distinct mechanical stresses. During running, heels hit the ground repeatedly with significant force, making cushioning essential to protect joint cartilage and reduce stress on the lower back.
For strength training, however, Katykhina advised choosing shoes with a hard, flat sole. Rigid flat soles provide critical stability during heavy lifting movements, particularly squats, where maintaining firm contact with the floor is necessary to preserve balance and proper form.

For crossfit training, Katykhina recommended hybrid footwear models that combine moderate cushioning with strong heel fixation. CrossFit is a high-intensity workout discipline that combines weightlifting, gymnastics, and aerobic conditioning, requiring shoes that offer both impact absorption and lateral support.
Blending Athletic Functionality with Daily Fashion
Beyond functional safety, Katykhina highlighted that color selection plays an important role when choosing sports footwear, noting that athletic shoes have long transitioned into everyday fashion and streetwear.
She recommended choosing bright and neon-colored sneakers to complement running outfits paired with leggings. Bright color palettes are widely used in activewear styling, offering a vibrant look for outdoor and treadmill runs.
For strength training in the gym, Katykhina suggested opting for classic black, white, or dark blue models. For crossfit workouts, she recommended footwear designs that incorporate eye-catching accent details.
Selecting footwear tailored to specific exercise routines allows fitness enthusiasts to safeguard their joint health while keeping their workout attire aligned with contemporary style trends.
