Grammy winner Taylor Swift announced on September 22 that her brand new single Patient Zero will be released on September 25.
The announcement comes less than one year after the release of her record-breaking album The Life of a Showgirl. Swift revealed the news in a September 22 Instagram post, writing, "I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single 'Patient Zero' will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!)." She added, "It's available to pre-order now on my webstie for 24 hours."
The release follows a series of cryptic clues dropped by the pop star. Swift appeared alongside Mariska Hargitay in a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit themed sketch during the Emmys 2026 ceremony on September 14. In the clip played at the ceremony, Swift, who wed NFL star Travis Kelce earlier this year, said, "I think what we’re going to be looking for is hiding in plain sight. Saccharide, Aries, from the vineyard, North or South." Kelce later had a NSFW reaction to her appearance in the skit.
Fans initially speculated whether Swift would drop the re-recorded version of her 2006 debut album Taylor Swift or unreleased vault tracks from Reputation, both of which she confirmed existed after purchasing her master recordings in May 2025. Speculation intensified on September 21 when a third sheet of paper appeared under her masters letter and The Life of a Showgirl tracklist on her website. Listeners decoded the Emmys message by taking every third letter from the statement, highlighting C, E, O, E, N, and R to reveal "Encore." On September 22, Swift updated her Instagram bio by replacing the letter "o" with zeroes, writing, "And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u." While one fan asked on X, "0:00 is midnight?", another wrote, "If it’s rep vault tracks, I’ll be supporting. If it's TS13, I'll be supporting. If it's the debut TV, I'll be supporting If it's anything else, I'll be supporting."
