Scientists at the University of California, Riverside have named four newly identified insect species after American superstar Taylor Swift, placing them within a newly established genus called Swiftiephylus.
The discovery, announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, recognizes four distinct species of plant bugs that were named in honor of the singer and her music catalog.

Within the new genus, researchers designated the species as Swiftiephylus taylorae, Swiftiephylus amator, Swiftiephylus intrepidus, and Swiftiephylus poetorum. The names derive from a Latinized version of Swift's first name as well as her hit albums Lover, Fearless, and The Tortured Poets Department.
Scientific significance and inspiration
Sarah Schroeder, a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Riverside and co-author of the research publication, explained that as a lifelong fan of the singer, honoring Swift felt completely authentic while also highlighting the undiscovered diversity of insects.
According to the university, the newly classified insects belong to a family of soft-bodied plant bugs and are herbivorous creatures that feed on plant life. Schroeder noted that she hopes the high-profile naming will draw broader public attention to insect protection efforts.
The scientist revealed that the physical appearance of the insects also inspired their connection to the pop icon. The bugs feature light-colored bodies with red and orange markings that resemble the flowers of the Allocasuarina plant.
Schroeder pointed out that Swift's signature look includes blonde hair and red lips, matching the pale yellow coloring and red touches across the bodies of the insects. In the formal scientific paper, Schroeder referred to the insects as blondes.
Decades of research and identification
Swift is one of the most prominent figures in modern popular culture, known worldwide for her record-breaking music career. Naming biological organisms after notable cultural figures is an established practice in taxonomy to celebrate influential figures and engage the public with natural science.
The process of formally identifying and naming the species required years of detailed examination. The original insect specimens were gathered in Australia between 1995 and 2004 as part of a joint biodiversity research initiative conducted by American and Australian scientists.
During that field study, researchers collected approximately 50,000 individual specimens. Entomologists spent subsequent years sorting, examining, and classifying the vast collection before finally identifying the four unique species and assigning them their official names.
