Disney+ premieres a new episode of The Simpsons titled Yellow Mirror on Wednesday, August 26, delivering a two-part parody of the Netflix science fiction anthology series Black Mirror.
The release comes just days after news emerged that filming has begun on the eighth season of Black Mirror. Yellow Mirror marks the final installment of three exclusive special episodes produced for the streaming platform and announced at the start of the year.
These exclusive streaming episodes arrived after Fox, the broadcast network that has aired The Simpsons in the United States since 1989, began ordering shorter television seasons. Following the shift by Fox, animated productions including The Simpsons and Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy began producing exclusive standalone episodes for Disney+ and Hulu, where their streaming libraries are hosted.
The trilogy of exclusive summer specials launched on June 17 with the release of a double episode titled Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition. In that chapter, Marge Simpson discovers that Homer Simpson left their children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie home alone while relying strictly on a smart doorbell camera as a surveillance system.
The streaming platform followed that premiere on July 3 with Simpsley, a noir-style animated adventure set in Italy. The story depicted a younger Marge attempting to persuade Elementary School Principal Seymour Skinner to return to Springfield.
Parodying dark technology themes
Yellow Mirror divides its narrative into two dark, curious, and strange stories in which the Simpson family attempts to find light. According to the official synopsis, the first segment features a defective lamp that reveals a heartbreaking truth about what Homer believes to be reality.
In the second segment of the episode, an artificial intelligence tablet forms a friendship with Maggie Simpson and begins controlling her.
Showrunner Matt Selman presented the two-part anthology special as a hybrid between Black Mirror and Treehouse of Horror, the long-running Halloween special format of The Simpsons. Selman noted that the production team used technology as a pretext to explore family psychology.
The episode was written by veteran series writer Carolyn Omine and her son Kai Omine. The writers structured the two segments to create a distinct contrast between a first half with an unprecedented emotional charge and a conclusion featuring dark tones.
Anthology traditions and tech satire
The Simpsons has long utilized multi-segment anthology formats to experiment with narrative styles outside its core episodic structure. Its annual Treehouse of Horror episodes, which debuted during the second season of the show in 1990, traditionally feature three self-contained stories spoofing horror cinema, classic literature, and science fiction.
