The Wheel of Time fantasy franchise will return in 2027 as a strategy board game following the cancellation of its television series by Prime Video.
The upcoming tabletop project, titled War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, is being created by game developer Dire Wolf and marks a complete genre shift for the franchise.

Crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter
Dire Wolf funded the game through a public Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that raised $1,166,993 from more than 6,000 backers.
The substantial funding total demonstrates strong lingering interest in the fantasy universe despite the end of the television show.
While many fans continue to hold out hope that another streaming platform might pick up the television series for future seasons, the franchise is expanding into tabletop gaming in the meantime.
Prime Video had adapted the books into a major live-action fantasy television series, but the streaming platform cancelled the show after three seasons, leaving significant portions of the literary saga unadapted.
Tabletop strategy gameplay
War of the Dragon introduces a tabletop strategy experience designed to simulate the central narrative struggle of the book series.
Players manage large armies and maneuver across a fantasy world defined by magic, ancient prophecies, and widespread warfare.
The game structures its core conflict around the battle between the forces of Light and Darkness, represented by Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, and the Dark One.
Participants make strategic choices throughout the game that ultimately determine whether the world is saved or succumbs to destruction.

Direct adaptation of Robert Jordan novels
A key distinction of War of the Dragon is that it adapts Robert Jordan's original books directly rather than following the Prime Video television series.
This decision allows Dire Wolf to explore storylines, historical events, and characters from the original novels that were excluded from the three-season television adaptation.
Author Robert Jordan launched The Wheel of Time novel series in 1990, building a multi-volume epic fantasy world that went on to sell tens of millions of copies worldwide.
Game developer Dire Wolf specializes in both physical board games and digital tabletop adaptations, frequently transforming established literary and media intellectual properties into strategy games.
Release schedule and availability
Shipments of the first board game units are scheduled to begin reaching Kickstarter backers in early 2027.
Following the fulfillment of backer rewards, Dire Wolf plans to make War of the Dragon available through a standard commercial retail release for the general public.
