British actor Theo James has confirmed he remains opposed to playing James Bond, stating that taking on the iconic role requires sacrificing too much personal privacy and family life.
Speaking in a recent interview with Extra, the actor of Greek descent addressed ongoing speculation surrounding the search for the next 007, refusing to confirm or deny whether he had any involvement in the casting process.
James observed that currently every British actor, as well as every non-British actor, appeared to be linked with the Bond role, describing the persistent speculation surrounding his potential involvement as a very nice rumor circulating.
He described the secret agent as a major element of cinematic culture, explaining that this widespread recognition was precisely why he did not wish to accept the part.
James explained that he had always maintained that the sacrifices in terms of personal privacy and everyday reality associated with such a role were far too large to accept.
He noted that for an actor raising children and trying to maintain a relatively normal life, stepping into the world of James Bond would represent an overly complicated environment.
Actor feared permanent loss of anonymity in GQ comments
His latest remarks follow comments he made to GQ magazine last month, where he stated that he considered himself definitely too old to portray 007 and voiced concern that taking the role would cost him his anonymity.
In that interview, the star of director Guy Ritchie's television series The Gentlemen asked listeners to imagine suddenly being unable to walk down the street, noting the severe pressure that public scrutiny would place on children attempting to grow up under intense fame.
James added that while receiving an offer for a massive, life changing role could be extremely tempting at the moment, it ultimately would not be worth the cost, describing the role of Bond as a situation from which a performer could never return.
Search for Daniel Craig's successor continues
The 007 franchise is one of the longest running and highest grossing film series in cinema history, centered on the fictional British secret agent created by author Ian Fleming in 1953.
James has been repeatedly cited by industry observers and fans as a potential successor to Daniel Craig, who officially stepped down from the role following the release of his fifth Bond film, No Time to Die, in 2021.
In May 2026, studio parent Amazon MGM confirmed that the formal search process for the next James Bond actor had officially begun for an upcoming feature film.
The studio revealed that the script for the new Bond instalment is being written by Steven Knight, the creator of the period drama series Peaky Blinders, with director Denis Villeneuve set to helm the production.
