Tom Hanks in Talks for Theo of Golden Movie Adaptation

Actor Tom Hanks is in negotiations to star in a film adaptation of Allen Levi's bestseller Theo of Golden for Warner Bros Pictures.

According to entertainment publication Deadline, the film studio is finalizing a deal to secure feature film rights for the breakout book, with contracts currently being drawn up.

Hanks will also produce the movie alongside Gary Goetzman and Gil Netter. Author Levi will serve as an executive producer, while studio executives Jesse Ehrman and Sheila Walcott oversee the adaptation for Warner Bros Pictures.

The novel centres on an elderly man who arrives in Golden, a small town in the American South. Upon his arrival, he purchases a series of pencil portraits of local residents displayed on the walls of a local coffee shop. As he journeys to return each drawing to its owner, moving stories and deep human connections unfold, ultimately helping him face a painful trauma from his past.

Publishing Phenomenon and Grassroots Growth

The path of Theo of Golden to mainstream success began quietly when Levi independently published the book in 2023. Levi had previously left his career in law to focus on music while living on a quiet island in Georgia. Without an organized marketing campaign, the debut novelist became a publishing phenomenon shortly before turning 70 years old.

The book built its readership gradually through word of mouth, assisted by the author's nephew, Aaron Ritchie, who sought ways to increase public awareness. Major media attention followed, with extensive feature coverage in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. The novel experienced a dramatic surge after Levi and his book were featured on Oprah Winfrey's podcast, which acted as a catalyst for its rapid rise.

Global Bestseller and Sales Figures

Following its initial success, publishing house Simon & Schuster released the book in wide distribution last October. The novel has sold more than 3.5 million copies in the United States alone.

The story has been translated into 43 languages worldwide. It has reached the top of bestseller charts in several international markets, including the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands.
