Tyler Duckworth, a two-time champion of the MTV reality competition series The Challenge, has died at the age of 44 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. His mother, Joni Duckworth, announced on August 13 that the reality television personality had passed away earlier in the week, noting that an official cause of death was not immediately known.
Officers from the Grand Forks Police Department discovered Duckworth inside his apartment bathroom. Police representatives told E! News that investigators found no signs of foul play and do not consider the death to be suspicious, adding that authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
Duckworth became a prominent figure on cable network MTV through his appearances on physical elimination and social strategy shows. The Challenge, which debuted on MTV in 1998, pits reality television personalities against one another in grueling athletic tasks and elimination rounds for cash prizes. Duckworth earned overall victory on two separate seasons of the franchise.
Mother remembers teaching passion and school days
Following the announcement of his death, Joni Duckworth reflected on her son's personal life and career trajectory, describing his early childhood and his later work as an educator. She recalled his youthful enthusiasm before he pursued his career in the classroom.
Speaking to People magazine on August 14, she shared memories of his childhood and career. "My Ty-Guy would skip to school when he was little," she told People. "Tyler found his passion in teaching and he was good at it. I understand his students loved him. He taught world history. He loved history and geography and as he had traveled the world over I am sure he brought many insights to his students."
Reflecting on her son's passing, she added: "He has now gone on to a better place where the hurts and challenges (pun intended) are no longer."
She also expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support from viewers and friends across the country. "To all of Tyler's friends and fans, God bless you for loving my Ty-Guy," she told People.
Fellow Challenge stars pay tribute
News of Duckworth's death prompted tributes from several of his former castmates and competitors across the long-running reality series. Contestants who competed alongside Duckworth posted messages honoring his legacy and remembering their time together on television.
Johnny Bananas, a fellow competitor whom Duckworth eliminated during the 2010 Cutthroat season before the pair teamed up to win the Rivals season in 2011, shared a brief message on social media platform X on August 13. "When it rains it pours," Bananas wrote.
Challenge all-star Wes Bergmann also expressed his grief, describing Duckworth as "one of the most remarkable men I've ever met" in a tribute posted to X on August 14.
"I'm struggling dealing with our loss yesterday," Bergmann wrote. "He lived an inspiring life and leveraged every minute he had. I'm just sick thinking of how big of a hole he left in y'all's hearts, the Challenge family's heart, and his actual family's heart."
