Ukrainian authorities introduced a new traffic sign at the end of January 2025 to warn drivers about upcoming road narrowings and safety islands.
The symbol features a black shield and a curved arrow set against a white background, displayed on a square plate placed along road shoulders across Ukraine. Many motorists remain unfamiliar with the marker, particularly those who completed their driving tests prior to its introduction. Traffic signs in Ukraine are designed to conform to standardized national highway codes, ensuring consistent safety warnings across urban avenues and rural highways.
Official traffic regulations classify the marker as Sign No. 7.55, titled Safety Island. The black shield depicts the physical safety island structure in the roadway, while the curved arrow indicates the exact direction vehicles must take to clear the obstacle safely.
Rules for motorists
When approaching Sign No. 7.55, drivers are required to increase their vigilance and gradually reduce vehicle speed as the roadway narrows. Traffic rules prohibit motorists from overtaking other vehicles or changing lanes directly ahead of the designated safety island.
Drivers must also maintain a safe distance from other vehicles while navigating the narrowed lane. In many locations, the marker is paired with auxiliary traffic indicators to reinforce road safety requirements.
These supplementary markers include Sign No. 1.39 for hazardous areas, Sign No. 1.5.1 for road narrowing, and Sign No. 3.29 for speed limits. Motorists are obligated to comply fully with the instructions on any accompanying sign.
Pedestrian safety and design
Safety islands are physical refuge structures placed in the middle of multi-lane roadways to allow pedestrians to cross safely in stages. By shortening crossing distances across busy thoroughfares, these traffic engineering features reduce pedestrian collision risks and calm vehicular traffic.
The presence of Sign No. 7.55 alerts drivers to monitor road shoulders carefully and prepare to yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks. The indicator also serves pedestrians by identifying protected crossing locations on multi-lane streets.
In addition to clear signage, safety islands in Ukraine frequently feature auxiliary street lighting to enhance visibility after dark. National traffic safety regulations, known as the Rules of the Road or PDR, govern driver licensing standards across Ukraine, making knowledge of updated signs essential for motorists and pedestrians alike.
