Veterinarians Elizabeth Stelow and Alison Gerken have explained why cats experience sudden bursts of activity known as zoomies, media outlet Futura reported. Scientists refer to these moments of frantic random activity as a normal feline behavior.
Certified veterinary behavioral specialist Elizabeth Stelow said zoomies differ from regular play because zoomies seem almost uncontrollable, whereas play is more deliberate. Stelow noted that cats often run around corners on hardwood floors and crash into walls during these episodes. She added that play involves interaction with a human, another cat, or a toy, while zoomies do not appear to involve interaction.
Health Benefits of Zoomies
Veterinarian Alison Gerken described zoomies as a healthy way for a cat to release energy. Gerken said these playful energy bursts often happen when a cat has been still for some time and experiences a sudden surge of strength. She noted that cats usually display relaxed body language during zoomies, including ears in a neutral or forward position, a raised or gently waving tail, and playful meowing or chirping sounds.
Gerken explained that bursts of activity help release endorphins, which can create pleasant feelings or a state of euphoria. She added that the movements strengthen muscles, boost cardiovascular health, and support overall well-being. Because cats are crepuscular animals that are most active at dawn and dusk, Gerken said it is natural for owners to notice zoomies early in the morning or in the evening.

Scientists previously noted that cats use their owners as a source of security when investigating whether cats love their owners as much as dogs do. Researchers also determined that the location and material of a water bowl play a key role in why a cat might choose to drink from a sink or toilet rather than its bowl.
