Vogue Williams has accused her mother, Sandra, of "having the audacity" to veto her original choice of name for her fourth child, Elvis, pointing out that her mother named her Vogue back in 1985.
The television presenter, 40, and her husband, Spencer Matthews, welcomed their baby boy last Tuesday and confirmed his name as Remy. Vogue had revealed ahead of her due date that the couple were making a U-turn on Elvis, the name they originally chose in tribute to the rock'n'roll legend, and needed to settle on something new. Williams, a model turned television presenter, and Matthews, best known for appearing on Made in Chelsea, are already parents to three other children.
Speaking on her podcast with her sister Amber this week, Vogue said the family's reaction had played a part in dropping Elvis. "So we're not using the name Elvis anymore because my entire family have b****ed about me behind my back but that's not why. Everyone knows not to cross me," she said.
Amber told her mother the decision was not hers to make. "I did say to her 'well it's her and Spencer's child so I think they can do whatever they want'. I had your back," Amber said.
Vogue then turned her attention directly to her mother. "And I'm sorry Sandra did you call someone Vogue, as I seem to remember that you did," she said, before asking whether Sandra had faced any "hassle" for naming her daughter Vogue in 1985.
Vogue accuses her mother of lying
Vogue said: "I said 'really you got no hassle for calling me Vogue back in 1985?'. She said 'no, there's a Saint called Vogue', but I know she only found out about that like a few years ago, so she is lying. She is a liar."
Vogue had earlier revealed the couple were dropping their original choice after receiving comments from family members. Speaking on her My Therapist Ghosted Me podcast, she said: "Do you know what? Big news from my week. We have changed our baby name, we have no name. You know the name was pretty full on and I loved the name. Spenny has been getting a few phone calls from family members regarding the name."
Her co-host Joanne McNally joked: "I just don't think Gary is that controversial." Vogue continued: "I honestly thought though because it's been on my mind I just, I haven't ever been 100 per cent comfortable with it. But because as much as I love the name it's such a big name to take on when you're little or trying to get a job when you're older. I have got other very cool options, though that was my favourite name," before confirming: "We were going to call the baby Elvis, I love it."
Famous friends welcome baby Remy
After announcing the name on Sunday, the couple received messages from friends. Paloma Faith wrote: "Love the name remy!" while Ashley James said: "Congratulations!" and Holly Willoughby added: "He's gorgeous… welcome to the world Remy."
Announcing the birth last Tuesday, Vogue wrote: "Our beautiful baby boy has arrived safely… The house is bursting with excitement, love and happiness and we couldn't be more delighted."
The arrival came in a busy week for the family, which also included the eighth birthday of their eldest son, Theo, on Saturday. Sharing pictures on Instagram, Vogue wrote: "Our first baby is 8! Happy birthday sweet, kind, football mad Theodore… the best big brother."
The couple had announced they were expecting their fourth child in April, when Vogue shared pictures on Instagram captioned "baby number four incoming..."
Spencer Matthews races Big Half marathon
Despite the arrival, Spencer was back racing on Sunday, completing London's The Big Half half marathon. Speaking after the race, he said: "Running completely changed my life. It gives me something outside of work and family to strive towards and chip away at. I think for me, who spent a lot of their adult life like a little bit lost and without purpose, it's really helpful to me to have this kind of structure in my life. And there's nothing more satisfying than feeling proud of yourself. It's a really underrated feeling. So you know, I feel proud of myself today. But I love chipping away at the goal. It means a lot to me, and it's completely transformed my life."
Sharing his medal on Instagram, he revealed he is working towards the Berlin and Valencia marathons in the coming months. He wrote: "THE BIG HALF! 1:23:05 official chip time. 3:54/km average pace. First time racing a half, with PBs in 15 KM, 10 miles, 20 KM and the half marathon. Today was supposed to be a hard session (not an all-out race) and an assessment of where we are before the Berlin and Valencia marathons. This run was tough, harder than expected, but it was rewarding. Overall I'm proud of the result on a hot and hilly course. The road to 2:45:00 continues."
