Placing vinegar-soaked kitchen sponges inside a washing machine detergent compartment effectively dissolves stubborn limescale, soap residue, and mold buildup.
Regular washing machine use causes laundry gel, detergent powder, and fabric conditioner to build up inside the dispenser drawer over time. Persistent humidity within the tray creates a damp environment where mold and fungus develop, which damages the appliance, spoils laundered clothing, and presents potential health risks to occupants.
To execute the cleaning hack, clean kitchen sponges are placed into the specific tray slots where detergent gel, powder, and fabric softener are normally poured. Table vinegar with a nine percent concentration is then poured directly onto the sponges until they are thoroughly saturated with the acid.
The saturated sponges are left inside the compartment for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the acetic acid time to penetrate and soften the hardened mineral plaque and soap residue. Because kitchen sponges retain liquid, they keep the acidic solution in constant contact with the plastic surfaces rather than letting it drain away.
