The live streaming service Twitch removed a video posted by an 18-year-old who, according to authorities, opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday, killing 10 people and injuring three.
He told a Twitch spokesperson the hollywood reporter That the company canceled the live broadcast at Tops Friendly Market less than two minutes before filming began.
“We are devastated by the shooting that took place this afternoon in Buffalo, New York,” Twitch said in a statement. “Our hearts are with the society affected by this tragedy. Twitch has a zero-tolerance policy for any type of violence and works quickly to respond to all incidents. “Customer service has been suspended indefinitely and we will take all appropriate action, including monitoring any accounts that redistribute this content.”
The Twitch team continues to use proactive screening and human review for any transitions to monitor the platform, as well as coordinate with law enforcement as needed. The company has yet to find video-on-demand footage of the shooting.
Law enforcement officials say the 18-year-old white suspect, who was heavily armed, eventually surrendered and was later identified as Peyton Gendron, a resident of Conklin, New York, in a district 200 miles southeast of Buffalo.
The 11 victims were black and two were white, police said in a statement.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told media the incident was “the worst nightmare any society can face and it hurts us and now it hurts us”.
