Despite the controversy surrounding the explicit scenes, the actress claims that she was not disrespected throughout the filming
Even before its debut, The Idolsparked worldwide controversy. A report by Rolling Stone USAin early 2023 told how the production process of the series aired by HBO was extremely troubled, with the dismissal of the original showrunner, Amy Seimetzso that the filmmaker Sam Lewinson and the singer and actor The Weekndboth responsible for directing, gave a very different tone to the production – with many sex scenes and, according to reports at the time, fetishization of rape.
The controversy was not reduced with the premiere, in early June. The actress Lily-Rose Deppdaughter of Johnny Depp and responsible for playing the protagonist Jocelyn (a singer on the rise), appears in several nude and sex scenes. It got to the point where it manifested itself now, at the end of the first season, regarding the topic.

In an interview with Vogue Australiathe artist said that all the explicit passages in The Idol are “really intentional”. More than that: she guarantees that all that was “necessary” for her as an interpreter. Initially, Lily-Rose stated:
“For me, the whole character, the show and her arc was really a complete collaboration. We know we’re doing something provocative and we’re not shying away from it. This is something I knew I was planning to do from the beginning.”
Next, she highlighted having an understanding that the production is not for all audiences.
“I was never interested in doing something puritanical. It’s okay if this show isn’t for everyone, that’s okay. I think the best kind of art is the kind that creates polarization.”
Respect and safety on set
Still in her statement, Lily-Rose Depp made it clear that she was never disrespected throughout The Idol recordings. On the contrary: she claims that she has never received such good treatment as she does now.
“I’ve never felt so respected and safe on a movie set, honestly. And I think the trust that we all build with each other could only make for a really safe tandem. So when it comes to the nudity and the edgy nature of the role, that to me was really intentional. That was really important to me and something I was excited to do. I’m not afraid of that.”
Finally, the artist commented that the current context of the world allowed the plot to be developed in this way.
“I think we live in a highly sexualized world. I think it’s an interesting thing to explore.”
