With this series, director Emma Cooper (The Marilyn Monroe Mystery: Untold Conversations) wanted to concentrate public perception of the caseto its virality but also to the ability of social networks to break or restore an image. Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard therefore examines the communication possibilities offered by the Internet, in particular through the sharing of false information and the mounting of hate campaigns.
It is for this reason that Emma Cooper did not want to question the two actors so that they could give their version of the facts again, the objective of the documentary not being the analysis of their battle, but the incredible profusion of comments around it. The director explained to variety :
My intention has always been to try to talk about the reactions around the trial. (…) I really wanted to talk about us and the way we communicate, and the way we observe events that have nothing to do with us.
I really think Johnny Depp is so famous, he’s a megastar. Fans of her think they see the pirate (at the helm). And she’s about 25 years older than Amber. So this is a very unusual case. Wasn’t it fascinating to see how deeply people are in love with the man and the character? That’s the power of Hollywood.
