One of the greatest examples of a series with a disappointing ending is Game of Thrones. The production of HBO was one of the most praised throughout a good part of its airtime, but the episodes of the eighth and final season left so much to be desired that even the professionals involved criticized the result.

One of them is the actor Conleth Hill. Responsible for interpreting Varys in the work, the northern Irishman declared in an interview with The Timeswho was especially unhappy with his character’s fate in the plot.

“I thought I had done something wrong. Until the last two seasons, I didn’t have any complaints. I just felt frustrated with the final episodes because Varys was no longer the recognizable character he once was.”

In the view of hillthere was divergence between the creative core of game of Thrones and the broadcaster. Therefore, everything ended up being “a little rushed”, being the great defect of the final season in his opinion.

“I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end the show and the HBO studio wanted to do another. I felt like last season was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I’m okay with it.”

Other reviews

As already highlighted, Conleth Hill is not the only one to criticize the ending of Game of Thrones. the interpreter of arya stark declared in a broadcast on Twitch (via Insider) that things went off the rails in the final season.

“It definitely went off the rails at the end. But it started out really strong. I was heartbroken when Ned [Stark, pai de Arya] died, but I knew this would happen. For the first time, I could really feel the story. […] For once, it feels good to be proud of it. It was 10 years of my life.”

In turn, the author of the books that inspired the series, George RR Martin, was sincere in stating that he was “out of the game” with the showrunners of the HBO, DB Weiss and David Benioff, after the first four seasons. The speech was given to The New York Times.

“In Seasons 5 and 6, and certainly Seasons 7 and 8, I was pretty much out of the game. Why? I don’t know. you need to ask Dan and David.”

Game of Thrones Universe

Despite the disappointing ending, game of Thrones has generated derived series. The first one, The Dragon House, premiered in 2022 and should win a second season next year. A HBO also gave the green light to other related works, such as Snow, focused on one of the protagonists of the original series, Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

Another related work is The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, prelude based on the tales Tales of Dunk and Egg, written by George RR Martin. According to the synopsis released by the broadcaster, the new spin-off takes place 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when House Targaryen still ruled Westeros. Its protagonists will be the knight Duncan the Tall (which we can translate as “Duncan the Tall”) and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, or Egg, known for his short stature.
