The Little Mermaid: the good news that Disney no longer expected

The Little Mermaid: a half-hearted live action

The latest classic Disney cartoon adapted into live action, The little Mermaid directed by Rob Marshall did not have the success hoped for in theaters. In fact, the feature film has only grossed $570 million at the time global box officeWhileit would have cost almost 400 million (marketing budget included). Despite a major promotional campaign, the public did not respond to this new variation around Andersen’s famous fairy tale.

Let’s remember that the plot of the film is similar to that of the cartoon. The young actress Halle Bailey lends her features to Ariel, a young mermaid, daughter of King Triton, fascinated by humans. Although she is strictly forbidden to return to the surface, falls in love with Prince Eric, a human, and agrees to make a pact with the sea witch Ursula to take on a human appearance. With the help of his faithful friends, Flounder, Eureka and Sebastien, he embarks on an adventure as dangerous as it is hair-raising.

A surprise success on Disney+

Even if the film did not have the expected success in theaters, Disney can be reassured by the data from its streaming platform. Indeed, The Little Mermaid is available in the US on Disney+ starting September 6th and just got off to a record start. With sixteen million views in the first five days of its arrival on the platform, Rob Marshall’s film simply achieved one of the best debuts of all time for Disney+ with Hocus Pocus 2 (which was not released in cinemas Ed).

Record figures which should help to replenish Disney’s coffers a bit, but which could also convince the company to focus more on digital releases than on cinematographic ones…
