Pierre Niney impressive in Save or Perish
In 2018, Pierre Niney plays, together with Anaïs Demoustier, the main role of the film Save or die directed by Frédéric Tellier. The film, inspired by true events, tells the life of Franck, a young and promising firefighter, whose life is tragically turned upside down when he is seriously burned in a fire. I woke up in the hospital, with my face unrecognizable due to the burns, Franck begins a physical and psychological reconstructionto take back your life and your identity.
For this role, Pierre Niney accepted a considerable challenge. To authentically embody a firefighter, he underwent four months of intense training with the Paris firefighters. Naturally lean, Niney had to adopt a strict diet and rigorous training to gain nine pounds of muscle, a significant physical transformation that allowed him to perform the impressive fire sequence without a stunt double. This transformation, beyond the simple increase in muscle mass, was essential for the actor to be able to feel and express the daily reality of a firefighter.
A drastic change in diet
However, this metamorphosis was only the first step in Pierre Niney’s journey for the film. After playing the fireman at the height of his strength, he had to lose this muscle for the second part of the film, where Franck is hospitalized and weakened. This radical change, achieved through an exclusive juice diet for a month and a half, is a testament to the actor’s deep physical and emotional commitment to his role. On this brutal physical transformation, he declared:
It was a real physical challenge. I had to stop weight training completely and for a month and a half I only drank juice! But for the two parts of the film I wanted to make these transformations: change my body, my way of walking, my way of wearing clothes… to be as close to the character as possible.
After living in immersion with the Paris firefighters and undergoing intensive training, Pierre Niney was awarded the medal and the rank of firefighter first class as an honorific, during a ceremony held in the courtyard of honor of the Invalides, shortly before the liberation of the Paris firefighters. Save or die. She initially refused this reward, as she stated in an interview with Western France :
The honorary rank of 1st class was awarded to me at the Cour des Invalides. I initially turned it down because I didn’t feel justified in receiving such recognition as an actor. But the Paris firefighters insisted after seeing the film. They felt that Save or Perish paid homage to everyday heroes. So I accepted their proposal with joy and humility.
