Anatomy of a fall: from Cannes to New York
Last May, the film Anatomy of a fall by French director Justine Triet won the supreme prize at the Cannes Film Festival: the Palme d’Or. Released two months later in French cinemas, the film directed by Sandra Hüller was a great success, attracting more than one million spectators.
As a reminder, Anatomy of a fall depicts the family drama of Sandra, Samuel and their blind son Daniel, isolated in a mountain house. Their peaceful life is turned upside down when one day, Samuel is found dead at the foot of their house. The suspicious death leads to the opening of an investigation, plunging Sandra into a legal spiral.
Accused in questionable circumstances, oscillating between suicide and murder, Sandra finds herself at the center of an intense trial. One year after the tragic event, Daniel, a silent witness to the events, attends his mother’s trial. The film thus explores the complex dynamics and secrets buried within the couple through a process that examines in minute detail the soft underbelly of the relationship between Sandra and Samuel.
Last night, the film won two prestigious awards at the Gotham Awards in New York, which every year recognize the best independent films. Thereby, Anatomy of a fall it won awards for best screenplay and best international film.
A good sign for the Oscars?
Self Anatomy of a fall was not selected by the French commission in charge of nominating the Oscar candidate in the category of best international film, Justice Triet’s film still has every possibility of appearing in one or more categories of the Hollywood ceremony.
Its American distributor, NEON, can truly boast of having been the leader an incredible campaign in 2020 which led to the victory of Parasite (which also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes) at the Oscars (it won best film, best director, best original screenplay and best foreign film).
If we don’t see Anatomy of a fall win the Oscar for best film, it could however win the statuette for best screenplay, or even best actress for Sandra Hüller. The Gotham Awards have often been reluctant to award films before the Oscars. Let’s think in particular about Everything everywhere and everything at once Last year, TAIL in 2021, a Nomadlandor even a Moonlight.
