Berlin : Before The Paper House
The Paper House was one of the great successes of Netflix. Hailing from Spain, the series aired between 2017 and 2021 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. For example, it didn’t take long before Dali masks appeared as Halloween disguises, like the thieves of the National Currency Factory.
But long before the plan orchestrated by the Professor, some members already had some great successes under their belt. This is what we learn Berlinprequel series focusing on the sociopath Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso)one of the most important characters of The Paper House.

So you don’t need to have seen it The Paper House to enjoy this new Netflix show. Because this time they’re taking us Paris, with a brand new team made up of members each with very specific skills, but led by Berlin. Their goal is therefore to steal dozens of precious jewels, which is about to be exhibited in the capital. To do this, they will have to monitor the exhibition manager and dig into the Parisian catacombs…
Much love for a robbery
We may fear it Berlin it simply reproduces the same recipe as The Paper House (at least the first season). The reality is different, with a robbery ultimately very secondary to the benefit ofa series that talks above all about love! First of all with the character of Berlin, always well carried forward the charismatic Pedro Alonso, who begins the series heartbroken after yet another failed marriage. After that, the protagonist intends to focus on his brilliant robbery and put his feelings aside. Aside from the one newly settled in Paris, Berlin will have a new crush.
The Netflix series entertains by showing his obsessive character and all his moments of madness which almost make him forget about the impending robbery, while the other members of the team work without complaining about the task. Because Berlin remains true to himself, that is, a dangerous sociopath, capable of doing anything to achieve his goals. Without being a morally good character, remains fascinating.

But love in Berlin takes on different forms over the course of the episodes (all quite paced despite a certain length). And we finally understand why Netflix opted for Paris. Without overly supporting the romantic stereotypes we attach to the city, there is a real consistency to seeing all the members of the team wondering about love, evoke heartbreak, lack of experience or toxic love. Because if one has given up and no longer believes in love, seeing this like the end of Titanicanother will still have hope about it, when others experience passionate and carnal love…
An effective and convincing series from Netflix
This approach of Berlin He’s pretty smart. And the series finds the right balance between the criminal case that is preparing and the development of the characters. Luckily we escape the flashbacks The Paper HouseFor a tighter story (an eight-episode season that has a conclusion) but not short of twists.
Certain, everything is not very credible and coherent, especially whenever the characters speak in labored French. But Berlin remains effective enough to convince, with the door open for a new season. And with its captivating characters, deeper than they seembrought by a nice cast composed of Tristán Ulloa, Michelle Jenner (excellent), Begoña Vargas, Julio Peña and Joel Sánchez, we tell ourselves that the series could easily continue beyond this first season.
Berlin has been available on Netflix ever since December 29, 2023.
