“It Wasn’t the Best Time”: This awkward issue during Oppenheimer’s sex scene

Oppenheimera success on all levels

Great success of summer 2023, Oppenheimer came close to its author’s biggest box office hits with over $950 million in revenue worldwide, while The dark Knight AND The Dark Knight Rises it just exceeded one billion. An unlikely result considering the substance and form of the film Christopher Nolan : A three-hour biopic about the man behind the atomic bomb. But the filmmaker’s approach is very particular and far from the classicism that we sometimes find in films of this genre.

Christopher Nolan therefore won his bet and could very soon be awarded at the Oscars. As the 96th ceremony approaches (scheduled for March 11, 2024), a panel featuring the stars ofOppenheimer, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh, it has been organised. The opportunity for the latter to return to a particular scene of the feature film, which he had spoken about at the time of its release. Indeed it is the sex scene between Jean Tatlock and J. Robert Oppenheimer, which caused a scandal in India.

A technical problem at the worst time

If Cillian Murphy had spoken about the importance of this sequence, Florence Pugh shared this time (via Expiration) a funny anecdote about his filming. While the two performers acted out this scene completely naked, the camera broke. Or at worst, as intimate scenes can be difficult to pull off.

Right in the middle of our sex scene, the camera broke. Nobody knew but it happened. Our camera broke when we were both naked and it wasn’t the best time.

The actress says soa rather awkward pause it was necessary, as there were no other cameras available at that time. Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy then had to wait while repairs were carried out. That doesn’t stop the actress from taking it with humor as she tells it:

So there’s Cillian and I in this room, with a little team, and we’re both holding each other’s (arms). I thought it was a good time to learn. I asked, “Tell me what’s wrong with this camera?” You have to know how to live these moments. And I say, “What’s up with the shutter, guys?”

Eventually, Christopher Nolan explained to him that it was a problem with the way the light was captured by the camera. And despite this awkward moment, Florence Pugh showed up happy with this experienceclaiming that everyone felt”lucky to be there, every second of the day“.
