Avatars : the series, not the movie
For the general public, Avatars is an immense cinematic saga created by James Cameron and with the Na’vi, these great blue-skinned beings. For others, who are passionate about animation, Avatars rather it evokes a fantastic series in which a young boy with a shaved head and blue tattoos tries to preserve peace between the nations of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. The two works obviously have nothing to do with each other and with the animated series to which they are entitled Avatar: The Last Airbender (Avatar: The Last Airbender in VO), difficult to confuse with James Cameron’s films. However, this is what happened to one of the actors of the live action series offered by Netflix.

On February 22, 2024, the streaming platform released the first season of the adaptation of the animated series online. A show created by Albert Kim that fans have been waiting for for years. Netflix has taken the means to recreate the rich universe ofAvatar: The Last Airbender. There we find Aang who must master the four elemental powers if he is to save the world from the tyranny of the Fire Nation.
A very secret casting for the Netflix show
In the cast we find new faces such as Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara) and Ian Ousley (Sokka), but also more experienced actors such as Daniel Dae Kim (Lord Ozai) and Ken Leung (Commander Zhao). The latter, seen in Old AND rush hourwas questioned by Expiration on his knowledge of the original work. The actor was honest in admitting that he didn’t know Avatar: The Last Airbender Before. Even better, the casting having been very secretive, with very little guidance on the project, the actor joked that he it should appear blue. Implied, he was thinking of doing some tests for the other Avatarsthat of James Cameron.
At the beginning of the audition we didn’t know it was for Avatar. It was quite secret and disguised as another project. But when I found out it was for Avatar, at first I thought I would be blue. (laughs) Looking back, I’m happy I came to the series without any knowledge. Otherwise you may be somewhat corrupted in your creative process by what has been done before.
Ken Leung’s anecdote is funny and demonstrates the possible confusion between the works for an audience far removed from all this. You don’t have to be ashamed if you too were upset when you saw it coming The Last Master of the Air on Netflix and the absence of Na’vis in it.
