Nosferatu: the most famous teeth in cinema

The vampire character Nosferatu first appeared in the German silent film of the same name directed by F.W. Murnau and released in 1922. This film was an adaptation not authorized by the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. To avoid copyright issues, character names and some plot details have been changed. Thus, Count Dracula became Count Orlok.

Count Orlok, alias Nosferatu, is depicted as a terrifying creature of the night with a cadaverous appearance, pointed ears, long claws and sharp teeth. Unlike other depictions of vampires, Nosferatu has a more monstrous and less human appearance, emphasizing the sinister and inhuman aspect of him.

See you in 2025 for his big comeback

Murnau’s film is considered a masterpiece of German expressionist cinema and was a success considerable influence about the horror genre. Nosferatu himself has become an iconic vampire figure in popular culture. The film has undergone several revisions, including Nosferatu the vampire (1979) by Werner Herzog, with Klaus Kinski as Count Orlok.

Forty-six years after the liberation of the latter, and more than a hundred years after that of Murnau, Nosferatu is preparing to return to haunt dark rooms. In fact, the director Robert Eggers (to whom we owe in particular The Witch AND The Norman) tackled the remake of the 1922 film which will be released in French cinemas on January 1, 2025. The cast includes Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin,

The first trailer released today by Universal sets the tone for the film which seems very close to Murnau’s German expressionist aesthetic. Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgard) is only shown from behind at the end of the trailer, but he appears to scare anyone who stands in his path.
