The Underneath of the Family: This First Very Vulgar Title Didn’t Please Netflix at All

The lower side of the family : a love story with Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman

Even if the press is not convinced, and not even a good part of the viewers have confirmed it (39 and 31% favorable opinions on Rotten Tomatoes), Netflix will have at least managed to attract users with The lower side of the family (released June 28). Enough for the film to find itself in the top 10 of the most viewed programs of the moment, even in first place on Netflix France. It must be said that with a cast composed of Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey KingThe platform has had some discussions and we can’t say that the film’s success is really a surprise.

As a reminder, The lower side of the family follows Zara Ford, the assistant of movie star Chris Cole. The latter is difficult to live with, he is selfish and childish. So much so that one day Zara collapses and resigns. Realizing that he will hardly be able to do without her, Chris goes to her house to beg her to come back. Only he meets Brooke, Zara’s mother, and an unexpected chemistry is born between them. A nightmare for Zara that will surprise them in action…

A Logical Title Change for Netflix

Directed by Richard LaGravenese (PS I Love You), The lower side of the family has the original title A family affair. A title that in French would translate as “a family affair”, but which is obviously a play on words with the term “a deal” which means “a relationship”. The French title is obviously a little less subtle. However, the first title considered was even less so. Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman revealed this during an interview for People. In it, the actor explained that Richard LaGravenese had pitched them the project with the title “Son of a bitch“, which we won’t bother translating into French. In itself, this title would have been quite accurate in relation to the plot of this romantic comedy. Only, according to Nicole Kidman, Netflix considered it a little too vulgar.

Surprisingly, this title was not retained by Netflix.

What matters in the end, because with this first title Richard LaGravenese at least succeeded attract the attention of the two stars. Enough to be interested. And knowing that both were considered suitable The lower side of the familythey didn’t hesitate for long and jumped at the opportunity to collaborate together for a second time, 12 years after a very special experience on paperboy.
