Simply named The Exorcist: At the BeginningThe feature film was released in theaters 20 years ago, but without making much noise (it attracted only 320,000 spectators in French theaters).

In 1949

The Exorcist: The Beginning is set in 1949 and follows Father Lankester Merrin (played by Stellan Skarsgård), a priest going through a crisis of faith after the horrors he witnessed during World War II. Merrin, having temporarily given up his vocation, finds himself in East Africa supervise archaeological excavations. There he discovers an ancient buried Byzantine church, as well as an evil presence that begins to manifest itself.

When inexplicable and terrifying events occur, Merrin is forced to face his own demons and take on the role of an exorcist to fight this evil force. The film explores the genesis of evil who would later face Regan MacNeil in the original 1974 film.

The feature film suffered a chaotic production. The film was originally supposed to be directed by John Frankenheimer, who left the project shortly before his death in 2002. Paul Schrader took over, but the producers found his version too thriller-like and not very scary. He was then replaced by Renny Harlinwhich gave the film a more conventional, horror-oriented approach. Schrader’s version, considered an alternative, was released in 2005 under the name Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist.
