With ‘Squid Game’ Nominations, Emmy Awards Finally Go Global

Two years ago, Netflix had eight Emmy nominations. heterodoxHis German-American miniseries narrated in English, Yiddish and German.

Now, in 2022, another streaming show has helped make TV Academy truly global. squid game is the first series produced exclusively outside of a Western country and not entirely in English to receive 14 Emmy nominations in major categories, including Outstanding Drama Series. Siren Pictures’ Korean Thriller Is Netflix’s Most Rated Series This Year, Leading the Way ozarks s Weird stuff (13 each) and ana’s invention (Three).

Including the expected nominations from SAG winners Lee Jung-jae (Lee) and Jung Ho-Yeon (Supporting Actor), a total of five cast members received nominations. Park Hae-soo (who played the disgraced financier Sang-woo) and Oh Young-soo (the mysterious old man Il-nam) will face off in the supporting actor category, while Lee Yoo-mi made a surprise appearance. Named for his heartbreaking performance as Sae-byeok’s marble partner in the episode “Gganbu”.

This episode, which Netflix used to show at their FYC events squid gameThe epic nine-month bounty campaign saw players split into pairs to play a brutally twisted game set in a replica residential alley. “Gganbu” received production design nominations for production designer Chae Kyoung-sun, art director Gim En-jee, and set designer Kim Jeong-gon, and single-camera image editing for editor Nam Na-young.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has been given a few solo commitments to write the pilot, “Red Light, Green Light” and the finale, “One Lucky Day.” Other episodes that stand out with praise include “Stick to the Team” (the one with the fourth battle royale and Tug of War), which received cinematography nominations for DP Lee Hyung-deok and double acting for Lim Tae-hoon, Shim Sang. for Min, Kim Cha-yi and Lee Tae-young; and “VIPS” (the one who revealed the rich aliens the game is set for) for special visual effects in one episode (Visual Effects Supervisor Cheong Jai-Hon, CG (3D) Supervisor Kang Moon-jung, Visual Effects Producer Kim Hye-jin, design lead Jo Hyun-jin, matte paint supervisor Kim Seong-cheol, animation supervisor Lee Jae-bum, CG (2D) supervisor Shin Min-soo, and compositing supervisor Seok Jong-yeon and Jun Sung man).

And completing the award, composer Jung Jae-il received a nomination for the series’ main title.
