The Harry Potter series shifts into high gear
The long-awaited reboot of the saga Harry Potter in TV series has officially started the casting process. HBO, which has confirmed the production of this adaptation of the famous books by JK Rowling, is looking for its new Harry, Ron and Hermione. While the casting is openthe conditions for filling one of these emblematic roles are particularly demanding and precise.
So, as confirmed Varietycasting is open to children residing in the UK and Ireland and aged 9-11 as of April 2025. HBO wishes to remain true to the British origin of the work, recruiting exclusively young talent from these regions. For these legendary roles, HBO is committed to discovering them new faces capable of embodying this generation that will mark the history of television series.
But that’s not all: the young actors will have to meet some specific requirements when applying. In addition to the age group and residence, the production asks the candidates to express themselves with their natural accent, in order to preserve the authenticity of the characters in this new adaptation.
An inclusive and open approach
One of the big things about this casting call is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. HBO has announced that the casting call will be open to all children, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity. This marks a major development for the franchise, which opens up to a broader and more diverse representation. The production has thus expressed the desire to find the best young talents, whatever their origin, to give life to the cult characters of the saga.
In an official statement, the production confirmed that all qualified applications will be considered, without distinction of gender, race or any other criteria protected by law, thus underlining its commitment to casting that is representative of contemporary diversity.
A rigorous selection process
To participate in the casting, young actors must send two presentation videos. The first video must contain a short reading a poem or story of their choiceof a maximum duration of 30 seconds. Interestingly, no work related to Harry Potter is not allowed at this stage, probably to ensure a fresh and creative approach from the candidates.
The second video should be more personal. The children should introduce themselves, indicating their date of birth, their height and place of residence, while talking about a loved one or an animal they are particularly attached to. This presentation aims to evaluate not only their acting skills, but also their personality and naturalness in front of the camera.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 31 October 2023 and the series is due to film in the UK in 2025-2026.
A series that promises to be ambitious
This television adaptation of Harry Potter promises to be ambitious: each season will be dedicated to a book from JK Rowling’s saga, with the aim of creating a series in seven seasons. Warner Bros. and HBO are betting big on this project, which is scheduled for release in 2026. With an experienced production team, including Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Subjects) and Mark Mylod (Succession), the series has all the credentials to become a new global phenomenon.
By launching such an open but rigorous casting call, HBO is setting the stage for a new generation of actors who will have the daunting task of succeeding Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Fans will just have to wait to find out who will play their favorite wizards in this new version.
