Gladiator 2: The completely insane scenario that was rejected for the sequel

Gladiator 2 it could have been very different

Twenty-four years after the release of GladiatorRidley Scott is preparing to unveil the sequel to his masterpiece (discover our review). This very ambitious new film focuses this time on Lucius, son of Lucilla. Just like Massimo’s character before him, he will have to tread the sand of the arena.

Since the release of the first film, many rumors about potential Gladiator 2 has seen the light of day. If this finally materializes twenty-four years after the release of the first work, a very different sequel could have seen the light of day many years ago. We would later find out a completely unlikely story.

Nick Cave wrote an absolutely crazy sequel

A few years after the release of Gladiator, Russell Crowe called Nick Cave to ask him to write a screenplay for a sequel. The latter then got to work. And he proposed a story that is difficult to imagine. In a podcast with Marc Maron in 2013 he returned to this scenario, explaining that it was present a return of Maximus to Earth, sent to kill Jesus Christ :

“The Gods are dying in Heaven because one of them, Jesus Christ, is gaining popularity on Earth. And so the Gods send Maximus back to Earth to kill Christ and his worshipers. »

Nick Cave gave his Gladiator 2 the title of Christ the Killer. The script for this one even ended with a 20 minute scene included “all the wars in history, up to the Vietnam War. » Having been transformed into “eternal warrior”, Maximus would thus have spanned the centuries.

The script is fully available for reading

In his podcast with Marc Maron, Nick Cave called his Gladiator 2 script a “masterpiece”. Still, this was rejected. Which isn’t exactly a surprise given the more than daring plot proposed by the Australian artist.

Ridley Scott instead chose to adapt a screenplay written by David Scarpa years later. His Gladiator 2 it is visible from this Wednesday November 13th in French cinemas. However, if you wish, you can read the entire script written by Nick Cave. This is available following this link.
