Jason Van Eman, producer and former actor, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for defrauding investors of more than $60 million.
A Florida federal judge handed down the sentence Thursday after a jury found Van Eman, 44, guilty of wire fraud and money laundering, according to court records. He is also expected to pay more than $9 million in restitution to victims under his financing plan.
Prosecutors alleged that Van Eman and co-defendant Benjamin McConley, who worked at Weathervane Productions, offered funding to investors looking to produce independent films, Broadway shows and music festivals, among other projects. He told his victims he would make any contribution and used the capital to obtain funding from financial institutions, the Justice Department said.
According to the indictment, Van Eman hired a bank employee to convince the defrauded investors that their investments were eligible and their money was safe. When victims demanded their money back, Van Eman blamed the bank’s compliance issues, which led to multiple civil lawsuits against him. Van Eman continued to defraud investors to fund his legal defense. Prosecutors say he hired an online reputation management company to fend off the charges against him.

In 2021, McConley was sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud.
