Thor: Love And Thunder’s Brett Goldstein on getting his starring role in the MCU and the short time he had to prepare

Marvel Studios seem to continue to recruit actors left and right, and as a result, their talent pool has grown exponentially over the years. And through the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen, Thor: love and thunder, the company has chosen a true heavyweight in Brett Goldstein. The ted lasso the star appeared like new character of the MCU Hercules on occasion love and thunder credits , and there seems to be a lot more to say about his character’s future. Of course, like other Marvel alumni, Goldstein went through an interesting casting process and had to do some serious last-minute prep to get ready for the job.

The casting process for a Marvel production can be quite “unique” compared to how it works for other movies or TV shows. In the age of COVID, it usually starts with some sort of city hall meeting via video, which can be quite cryptic. In many cases, an actor doesn’t even know what role he is being courted for until he officially agrees to sign. Brett Goldstein had a rather “surreal” experience when Kevin Feige and company. knocked on the door, and I can’t even imagine how I would have reacted if I had been in his place:

No, I didn’t know what it was for. They told me some Marvel folks would like to have a Zoom with you, I met them and it was so surreal because … it was literally unexpected one night and I was so busy and I was like, ‘Can you find the time to a zoom? ‘Yes, of course.’ And they go to Zoom and they just tell me what you see in the movie, which is that they start with ‘So Russell Crowe is Zeus’, and I’m like ‘Yeah alright, go ahead’. And blah blah blah. And then they turn around and reveal ‘It’s Hercules; it is you.’ And I said, ‘What?’ Like, ‘Are you serious? Are you kidding me? Is that rope? ‘ So yeah, it was as surprising to me as I think it was to other people.

To feel that you will play in front Russell Crowe (who will be dressed as Zeus) is one thing, but knowing that you will play Hercules is another. Although the 42-year-old was taken aback by the offer, he clearly knew he couldn’t refuse it. And I’m glad he didn’t, because he’s a great choice for casting fan favorite comic book character.

Of course, if you’re planning on playing against an Olympian, you want to make sure your physique is perfect. Brett Goldstein appears to be in great shape, but he still needed some serious work before his MCU debut. The actor continued to tell the reading list who only had a few weeks to prepare and, on the day of shooting, did something extraordinary:

Yes, when I talked to Taika, I said, ‘You know I’m basically like a skinny comedian?’ I said, ‘When is this shooting?’ It’s been two weeks and I was like, “I mean, I’ll do my best, but two weeks feel like …” I said, “He doesn’t have to be as big as Thor, right?” And look, that day, I mean, that day I do 400 push-ups. He was about to explode. I did my best that day, yes.

I applaud his effort, because I don’t think he would have had the heart. (On the other hand, if they’d paid me millions of dollars, I’d probably have found the wit to keep going.) And he’s far from the first fun guy to gain weight for a role in Marvel. Kumail Nanjiani stuffed with serious muscles for his role as Kingo in eternal, and has managed to keep it ever since. Brett Goldstein can try to do the same with his role as a Greek mythological hero.

Hercules’ future in the MCU looks bright and I’m thrilled to see Brett Goldstein really sink his teeth into the role. This post-credits scene suggests that Herc may have started off as an antagonist to Earth’s heroes. But over time, Goldstein’s character may join Earth’s mightiest heroes (which happened in the comics). So yeah, I think the actor is probably happy he accepted this video reunion.
